Hamao Fujiwara studied under Saburo Sumi, Toshiya Eto, Yoshio Unno and Hideo Saito at Toho Gakuen School of Music and also under Joseph Fuchs at The Juilliard School of Music in New York.
He received the first prizes in both the Student Music Competition of Japan and the National Music Competition sponsored by NHK and Mainichi Shimbun. He also has won the second prize in the Paganini International Violin Competition of 1968 in Italy and the third prize in the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of 1971 in Belgium (both were the highest awards given to Japanese musicians at the time).
After completing his study at The Juilliard School, he stayed in New York for over 20 years and enhanced his music career in many fields as soloist, chamber musician and others.
In November 1992, he became the soloist/concert master for Yomiuri Nippon Symphonic Orchestra. Since April 1993, making the best of his teaching career and experiences at The Juilliard School of Music, Manhattan Music School and Michigan University, he has become a lecturer at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and also a visiting professor at Tokyo College of Music.
